A LEGO® building plate is the foundation of your building world: you can build more neatly, your models stay in place better, and you can expand more easily later. LEGO® describes the green building plate, for example, as a spacious landscape for building, playing and displaying your models—useful if you want a solid base for your city or nature project.

Looking for a large LEGO® Building Plate? You will often end up with the 48×48 format: LEGO® states that the gray building plate has 48×48 studs and measures approximately 38 cm × 38 cm—exactly what many people mean by LEGO® Building Plate 38x38. If you are looking for small LEGO® Building Plates, sizes such as 16×16 and 32×32 are popular for corners, extensions and smaller scenes; Brickset has mentioned these classic sizes since 1978.

For streets and city layouts, there is also a road-style LEGO® Building Plate extension in the form of LEGO® City road plates. LEGO® describes the Road Plates set as including streetlights, traffic lights, traffic signs, speed bumps and a pedestrian crossing, so you can immediately give your city more “infrastructure.”

Which size should I choose: LEGO® Large Baseplate or LEGO® Small Baseplates?
