LEGO® Baseplate
A LEGO® Baseplate is ideal when you build with structure: you can place your creation firmly, expand it easily, and keep it standing more neatly for play or display. LEGO® baseplates come in different sizes, so you can choose what suits your project: compact, standard, or extra large.
Many builders start with a 32x32 base, such as the green baseplate that LEGO® describes as a spacious “landscape” for building, playing, and displaying. Need more space? A LEGO® Baseplate 48x48 is popular for larger city blocks and extensive layouts; LEGO® also gives the dimensions in centimeters. For smaller expansions or modular corners, LEGO® Baseplate 16x16 is useful; Brickset lists 16x16 (alongside 32x32) as a classic size that was already available in 1978.
For collectors and vintage scenery enthusiasts, there is LEGO® Baseplate Raised: baseplates with height differences and “terrain” (e.g. craters, hills, water). Brickset describes how the first raised baseplate appeared in Space as early as 1979 and later returned in several themes, which is why they are often regarded today as distinctive and collectible. That is why some fans specifically search for a rare LEGO® Baseplate 32x32 with a print or relief, as it immediately adds atmosphere to your creation without requiring you to build the entire landscape.
