  • Valhalla for LEGO fans big and small

    I had a truly fantastic Lego experience in Oss today. What a great store and fantastic staff! My son felt like he was in a candy store. Buying used Lego works great. I think they'll need a lot more bricks in the future, because this store might be bursting at the seams soon ;).

Sports

LEGO® Sports is a now-discontinued LEGO® theme that ran from 2000 to 2007. The theme revolved less around large structures and more around sports action and games: think football/soccer as a base, later expanded to include basketball, hockey, and Gravity Games (snowboarding/skateboarding).

What makes LEGO® Sports sets so recognizable is that many have play functions that allow you to actually "shoot," "pass," or "score." In the early stages, the focus was on soccer, partly because foosball-like games were popular at the time. Through licensing, some sets could also display official sports logos (e.g., NBA/NHL).

Hockey is a nice exception within the line: the first hockey sets even used special figures made of Technic/Bionicle components instead of regular minifigures, and the line was linked to the NHL. This makes certain sets particularly interesting for collectors looking for unique components and variations within LEGO® Sports.

LEGO® Sports is a LEGO® theme (2000–2007) featuring sports sets that focus on action and play, such as soccer, basketball, hockey, and Gravity Games. Instead of just building, play features are the focus.

What LEGO® Sports sets are there (and which sports)?

Within LEGO® Sports, you'll find sub-themes such as Football/Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, and Gravity Games. Football ran the longest (2000–2007), while basketball, hockey, and Gravity Games mainly appeared around 2003–2004.

What should you look for when buying LEGO® Sports sets?

Be sure to check if the typical sports equipment (balls/pucks), any stickers, and special play elements are included. For hockey, unusual figures (Technic/Bionicle-esque) and NHL-related elements may also be included.
